FSU received the opening kickoff and the game started off with a bang. Halfback Jack Espenship got the kick and handed off to Bobby Renn who followed blocker Bob Swoszowski. Seventy-eight yards later, Renn was tackled on the Gator 15-yard line.

Shortly afterwards, the Seminoles scored and it was 7-0. Although FSU played tough throughout most of the game, the Seminoles were out-manned and lost 21-7.

FSU lost the game but a big time rivalry was born.

First game against the University of Florida
November 22, 1958, Gainesville
Florida 21, Florida State 7

In 1958, FSU finally got the opportunity to play the University of Florida in football. FSU lost the game, but it was a major step forward in FSU's progress. This was the first FSU vs UF game in modern times and it took acts of government to get it done. Legislative attempts to force the game and the promise of more to come along with pressure from numerous public officials eventually forced the University of Florida to agree to play the Seminoles.

Turkey. Stuffing. And Florida State-Florida football. 52 years ago this month, the Seminoles and Gators teed it up for the first time. Heavy hitters in state politics and the business world forged the shotgun marriage between the programs on the football field. What better time than now to look back at the great moments in this bitter, storied rivalry.

.

--- November 22, 1958 – The first meeting between Noles and Gators. FSU tailback Fred Pickard scores the rivalry’s first points and a feud was born.

September 30, 1961 – For the first time, the Seminoles escape Gainesville without a loss. John Harllee’s 29 yard field goal would score all the points Florida State would need in a 3-3 tie. A near riot ensues after the game as Florida State fans storm the field to tear down Florida’s goal posts.

November 22, 1964 – The Gators make their first visit to Tallahassee and the rivalry takes a new turn. Florida players arrive at Doak Campbell Stadium brandishing jerseys that read “Go For Seven.” Florida had not lost the prior six meetings. Yeah. Go For Seven. Fail. Fred Biletnikoff catches a 55 yard pass from Steve Tensi and Les Murdock booms three field goals in Florida State’s 16-7 victory, the Noles first of many conquests in the series.

--- November 25, 1967 – Florida State’s 8th trip to Gainesville is the best one yet. Quarterback Kim Hammond throws for two touchdowns and runs for another as the Seminoles win in Gainesville for the first time, 21-16.

December 3, 1977 – Florida suffers one of its most humiliating defeats ever on its own home field. The Quarterback tandem of Wally Woodham and Jimmy Jordan throw for more than 300 yards as the Seminoles destroy the Gators 37-9.

November 25, 1978 – Florida State scores three touchdowns in the first quarter and never looks back in a 38-21 win at Doak Campbell Stadium.

November 23, 1979 – For the only time during the regular season meetings between the teams, the game is played on a Friday the day after Thanksgiving. Undefeated Florida State puts a punctuation mark on the Gators’ winless season. In a game that was not as close as the score indicated, the Seminoles win 27-16 finishing the regular season 11-0. Florida ends its season at 0-10-1 to become one of the worst teams in college football history.

December 6, 1980 – Florida State Tailback Hardis Johnson runs for a pair of touchdowns as Florida State battles to a 17-13 victory at Doak.

November 28, 1987 – Running Backs Sammie Smith and Dexter Carter each rush for more than 100 yards. Dayne Williams scores a pair of touchdowns and the Seminoles cruise in Gainesville 28-14.

--- November 26, 1988 – Come and get your whippin. Seven different Seminoles score touchdowns. Florida State dominates likes never before by crushing the Gators 52-17.

December 2, 1989 – FSU Quarterback Peter Tom Willis tosses three touchdowns as the Gators play their final game on that notoriously rock-hard artificial turf at Florida Field. Florida State 24 Florida 17.

December 1, 1990 – Amp Lee and Edgar Bennett each rush for a pair of touchdowns and Lawrence Dawsey catches a 76 yard scoring bomb from Casey Weldon as the Seminoles ease into a 45-30 win.

November 28, 1992 – For the third straight game in Tallahassee, Florida State scores more than 40 against the Gators. Quarterback Charlie Ward throws for more than 300 yards as Florida State vanquishes Florida again, 45-24.

November 27, 1993 – Florida State’s road to its first national championship runs through Gainesville, but to the Seminoles it’s only a minor inconvenience. Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward throws for 446 yards and four touchdowns in the Seminoles’ 33-21 win.

--- November 26, 1994 – The game that coined the phrase “The Choke at Doak.” Florida leads 31-3 with 11:00 to play. Then the Seminoles stage a furious, miraculous 4th quarter rally with 28 unanswered points. The contest ends in a 31-31 tie that will forever feel like a win for the Seminole faithful.

January 2, 1995 – For the first time, an FSU-Florida game is played outside the Florida at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Before the game, the Superdome scoreboard reads 31-31, 5th Quarter. Quarterback Danny Kanell throws for 252 yards and Tailback Warrick Dunn throws a 73 yard touchdown to ‘OMar Ellison in the Noles’ 23-17 win.

November 30, 1996 – It’s the most anticipated game in the rivalry’s history. #1 Florida visits #2 Florida State. In a ridiculously physical contest, Pooh Bear Williams rushes for 2 touchdowns and the Seminoles claim the #1 spots in all the polls in a hard fought 24-21 win that saw Doak Campbell Stadium lose its goal posts and a lot of its turf in the post-game celebration.

November 21, 1998 – Wide receiver Peter Warrick caught one touchdown pass and threw for another, and Florida State’s defense did not allow Florida to convert a single third down all game as the fifth ranked Seminoles defeated the fourth ranked Gators 23-12 in Tallahassee. Backup Quarterback Marcus Outzen, filling in for an injured Chris Weinke completes 13 of 22 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown.

November 20, 1999 – The eyes of the nation are on the sinkhole in Gainesville as #1 Florida State visits #3 Florida. The winner grabs the inside shot at the national championship game. Florida State uses four different quarterbacks (Chris Weinke, Marcus Outzen, Dan Kendra and Peter Warrick) on its opening drive leading to a touchdown run by Warrick lined up as the quarterback. Sebastian Jainkowski blasts a 54 yard field goal. Jeff Chaney and Snoop Minnis add touchdowns as Florida State rolls toward its 2nd National Championship with a 30-23 win.

--- November 18, 2000 – In the middle of the State of Florida’s election recount fiasco, Florida State rolls to a landslide win over the Gators. Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke throws for 353 yards. Snoop Minnis catches two touchdown passes. FSU dominates at Doak 30-7.

November 30, 2002 – In a surprisingly easy win, Quarterback Chris Rix throws for nearly 200 yards. Tailback Leon Washington rushes for 134 yards. And Wide Receiver Anquan Boldin grabs eight passes for 101 yards as the Seminoles win handily over the Gators 31-14.

November 29, 2003 – The Seminoles and Gators engage in a back and forth slugfest in front of more than 90,000 people at Florida Field on a chilly afternoon. Seminole Wide Receiver P.K. Sam hauls in a 52 yard touchdown pass from Chris Rix with 55 seconds to go to give FSU a dramatic 38-34 win in the bowels of Alachua County. Florida fans claim the officials blew several calls which benefited Florida State. Other football observers the world over disagree and emphatically believe the game was officiated in a fair and consistent manner.

November 27, 2010 – The Seminoles and Gators meet for the 55th time. Since 1976, the teams are deadlocked at 17-17-1 against each other. FSU prepares to regain control of this series Saturday at 3:30. Come back to TPSM for news & photos from this year’s epic clash.

An FSU tradition since 1948, Pow Wow is the official pep rally held the night before the Homecoming football game, featuring performances by the FSU cheerleaders, Flying High Circus, Golden Girls and Marching Chiefs. Headlined by a venerated comedian, humor luminaries Adam Sandler, Dave Chappelle and Sarah Silverman have all graced the Civic Center stage.

This year’s event, held on Friday, Oct. 26, will feature two-time Emmy winner and comedienne Kathy Griffin. The outlandish spitfire has distinguished herself as a Hollywood celebrity critic, delivering sneering attacks on the Kardashian clan (or “the Armenian threat” as she calls them) Sarah Palin, Justin Bieber and Oprah. Griffin’s audacious wit deems her a comedic daredevil; jokes about Disney stars Demi Lovato’s cutting and Miley Cyrus’ promiscuity are just a sampling of her biting cultural commentary.

Griffin began her journey when she moved to California in the late seventies from her native Chicago, where she joined the renowned Los Angeles Groundlings comedy improvisational troupe. Her resume includes guest starring roles on television series ER and Seinfield, a 2011 Broadway debut, co-hosting the Billboard Music Awards three years in a row, performing 15 acclaimed standup specials on Bravo and topping the New York Times Best Sellers List with her autobiography Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin.

Since the success of her Emmy-winning 2005 reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, Griffin’s joined the ranks of nighttime talk show torchbearers with her Bravo pop culture show Kathy, premiering its second season in January 2013. The comedy queen was the first female comedian to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Comedy Albums chart for her Grammy-nominated For Your Consideration.

Apart from her quirkier endeavors—from voice-overs on animated show The Simpsons to her portrayal of a psychiatric ward nurse in Eminem’s 2000 music video, “The Real Slim Shady”—the star is a zealous activist in the gay and lesbian community. Griffin helped organize a rally in Washington D.C. to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and received the prestigious Vanguard Award from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation at the 2009 GLAAD Media Awards for her efforts in promoting equal rights for LGBT people. Griffin often cites her 92-year-old mother as a source of inspiration, incorporating her regularly in her standup.

Before heading to town, Kathy Griffin chatted with the FSView & Florida Flambeau about her excitement for Pow Wow, the 2012 presidential election and what to expect from her performance.

FSView & Florida Flambeau: What do you enjoy most about performing for a college crowd?

Kathy Griffin: I am very excited to be performing, not only for college students, but at Pow Wow in particular, because I think there’s going to be like 8,000 people there, so that’s massive, and also, it’s so exciting to be performing there Friday night, to be in the state capitol of a battleground state, right before the election. You guys are probably so inundated with robocalls and endless around the clock ads from this candidate and that candidate; this is the perfect time for me to go to FSU. I’m really excited about the combo of people of students and parents and alumni, hopefully some of the gays will get in, I mean that’s what makes a good show.

FFF: Will you address the election in your performance? How do you feel about the presidential debates?

KG: I’m going to be honest, when I watch the debate I’m watching it as a voter, but I’m also watching it as a comedian, and when Mitt Romney was talking about bringing back our naval situation to the way we were in 1915, you gotta admit, that’s just kind of funny. And also just the visuals; after the debate, having all those Romneys swarming the stage, and then Michelle and Barack Obama are standing there, and my mom said, ‘Why are all those white people swarming that nice black couple?’ And you know my mom is 92, so she can kind of get away with saying things like that. You just gotta laugh.

FFF: Who are you most excited to see at Pow Wow?

KG: I’m going to be with the Golden Girls dance squad, I may join. You know I’m not very limber, I’ll admit, I can’t even touch my toes, so for me that would be kind of like being on Dancing with the Stars, to be like an honorary Golden Girl. I hope someone from the Flying Circus is on a harness at some point. There’s something about performing at a Homecoming that is so unique and so ridiculous and fun. I just hope that everyone shows up knowing they’re going to be offended at some point. My job is to swear more than anyone ever has at Pow Wow, and I think I can do that, I think I can deliver for you guys.

FFF: Over the years, Tallahassee has garnered the nickname ‘Tallanasty.’ What are you thoughts on this?

KG: You really hired the perfect person. I’m very excited to bring the nasty to Tallanasty. I’ve never performed at the school, but I’ve performed in Tallahassee, I’ve performed in Jacksonville. I love Florida and Florida has been good to me.

FFF: What topics will you address in your standup on Friday night?

KG: We have so much to talk about, we’ve got to talk about Honey Boo Boo, we’ve got to talk about the Kardashians and how they keep multiplying, we are going to talk about everything from Couples Therapy on VH1 with Courtney Stodden, we are going to talk about Oprah’s Next Chapter, even though I thought she closed the book and there were no more chapters, we are going to talk about Mariah Carey versus Nicki Minaj, who’s your money on. We have a very full plate Friday night, we have to talk about the Hulk Hogan sex tape, he is a Floridian let me remind you. I mean I could do a whole show just talking about Florida.

FFF: Do you have any pre-show rituals?

KG: Well, I’m going to go up to somebody on the Gators and punch them in the balls.

FFF: A Gator is bound to show up.

KG: Oh those f***ing Gators, they’ll infiltrate anything. I don’t want to offend the ’Noles, but I am an equal opportunity offender, so I am happy to make anybody that I can laugh. My pre-show rituals are usually to take in as much of the local flavor as I can. I’m actually excited to see the whole show leading up to my performance. Every show that I do I give away tickets to a great organization called vettix.org, and it gives tickets to our service people and veterans, and I meet them and then I do the show. This is a different scenario, there’s going to be a dance squad and a marching band; I’m just a cog in the wheel, but I’m going to bring the heat, I’m going to bring the nasty, I’m going to swear a lot.

FFF: Any advice for Pow Wow-goers?

KG: I think you should probably leave your Bible at home. You know, to someone that throws the Bible in your purse, you might want to leave it home. It might just burst into flames. We’re going to make fun of everyone and everything, no one is getting off easy Friday night.

FFF: You starred in an episode of Law and Order: SVU where you played a lesbian militant feminist. Do you relate to this character?

KG: I am a militant feminist, I am a militant everything. That’s why I offend so many people. I don’t walk the line, I’m not middle of the road. I have very strong, strident ideas, which I either can or cannot back up with any facts. I feel very passionately about many issues, but I don’t always know what I’m talking about. And that’s why you have to laugh.

FFF: Where is the strangest place you’ve been recognized?

KG: In the bathroom. When I’m in a public bathroom and I walk out of a stall and somebody wants a picture, that’s always super weird. And I usually then try to explain to the person this is weird, put your camera away, you’re not going to like this picture and I actually don’t want to take a picture in the bathroom. I don’t go to your house and take a picture in your bathroom.

ponchos are so hot right now.

my last home game as a student. it rained. we lost. and that's okay - i prepared myself for it.

what i didn't really know how to prepare myself for is the finality of it. how do you say goodbye to doak? to the team? i still don't know. i don't really think you can.

anyways so about the picture: here's lisa and me and jenny with our sweet ponchos and face tattoos. this was taken w/ lisa's camera because i couldn't take Sophia (my digital Rebel) into the game since it was raining. i love my roomies & football!
