I took the photo to a framing boutique who quoted me 00. No thanks. We'll tear a whole into our wall and build a window for 00.
After days of calling around and googling for framing options I found www.metroframe.com online, who happens to be based in Edina. The folks at Metro Frame supply frames for all sorts of impressive clients, but price their frames incredibly competitively. They graciously shared their framing expertise to help me devise a plan to frame the picture for a reasonable price.
I ordered the frame, acrylic, and cardboard backing unassembled through them. They found a left over 3ft x 8ft scrap of mat and sold it to me for (a cut mat for a picture this large normally costs about 0 by itself).
Instead of cutting a hole in the mat and putting the mat over the picture, I drymounted the picture directly on the mat using a spray adhesive. I cut the outer edge of the mat to size, and presto, a framed picture!
The results are excellent. You honestly cannot tell that it is drymounted on the mat unless you get within 12 inches of it. Even then, it looks good.
Total price: 0. 20% of the price quoted by the boutique. Use Metropolitan Framing in Edina!
