Tried out a relatively new iOS app - Collage Frames Shuffle. You can select up to 30 photos (with the in-app upgrade) from the photo roll, Flickr or Facebook. It then produces a collage with a mix of thumbnail-size portions of the photos. If you don't like the arrangement, you can select the "shuffle" option and a different arrangement will be presented. Once happy with the overall arrangement, the portion of each photo shown in its thumbnail can be adjusted by panning and zooming. The color, shape and thickness of the borders can also be adjusted.
The developer is very enthusiastic, and receptive to suggestions for improvements and options such as ...
* Adding an option for square format as well as portrait or landscape rectangles.
* Making it more obvious that you can zoom and pan the photos once a collage has been generated.
* Adding more shuffle combinations - there seemed to be only a few combinations before you repeated them.
* Adding higher resolution output up to 3264 x 3264 pixels.
* Adding an option to drag a photo or select a pair to swap positions with the other photo.
* Allowing landscape or portrait orientation on the iPad rather than just portrait.

a few years ago I made these for my mum and my mother-in-law for mothers day, and a friend for her birthday. I'm not sure that I ever had a good photo of them.
